Lu “Somnus” Yao has confirmed his resignation from the Dota 2 esports scene, hours after dropping hints about his upcoming departure from the scene.
This is the statement that he made on Weibo:
My youth was shaped in a way that causes me to have regrets, and I have come to terms with the fact that I can no longer alter the circumstances of my life since it is too late. I am grateful to each of you for your support. My trip has come to an end. “Slept like a baby”
The news was made after his team, Royal Never Give Up, was eliminated from The International 2022. It was said in his statement that Somnus will feel disappointment for not winning a The International tournament, however it is important to keep in mind that despite this, Somnus will leave the Chinese professional Dota and Dota 2 scene with a large amount of renown. He is destined to be remembered as one of the most famous players in the history of Dota 2 among Chinese players.
SOMNUS WILL BE REMEMBERED FOR HIS TIME AT LGD-OWNED ROSTERS
Before he joined Royal Never Give Up and other highly competitive teams in 2013, he was one of the most powerful members of a variety of highly competitive organizations, including as Vici Gaming. The past several years have been a little bit challenging for him because a significant number of his teammates, including himself, have contracted COVID. The group persisted in their efforts in spite of everything that had happened.
He will be most fondly remembered for his time spent on LGD-owned rosters between the years of 2014 and 2020. During that time, those rosters were consistently one of the most competitive sides in the scene, frequently qualifying for The Internationals and not placing outside the top four in any of the four tournament iterations. It’s not something that every Dota 2 player can say about themselves, but he was a part of teams that won quite a few Majors throughout the course of that time period.
It’s possible that some other major Dota 2 players will announce their retirement in the near future as well.
The way his career came to an end was bittersweet. It is never pleasant to be on the losing side, but it is apparent that he received a lot of gratitude from admirers when he ultimately called it a day on social media and retired from the competition. It would appear that Somnus will not be the only participant in the competition to bow out at this point.
After the conclusion of the competition, Lasse “MATUMBAMAN” Urpalainen of Liquid and Zhang “Faith bian” Ruida, a Dota veteran from China, are both planning to put up their headsets. A significant number of his supporters replied to his message by urging him to reconsider his decision to depart. There have been instances in the past where players have returned out of retirement, but it appears that Somnus’ time in the Dota 2 game has come to an end. He is still very young at only 26 years old and still has a very long life ahead of him.
The conflict for control of the Aegis will carry on in the next days. Evil Geniuses and PSG. LGD continues to be the favourites to win the championship. Another unsuccessful marketing effort is in store for Royal Never Give Up when it’s all said and done. On to the following year.
